![]() ![]() What is undeniable is the fact that Topside’s mission-to publish literature by trans writers, trans women writers in particular, for a trans readership-was successful. This all depended on one’s feeling of proximity to inclusion in the networks of writers that gathered around it. Like any scene, Topside was just a couple of people with an idea to do something big together, and like any scene, it created a sense of belonging for some and of gatekeeping for others. Nevada, initially published in 2013, was the crest of the wave that was Topside Press, a small-but-mighty, short-lived press run out of a New York living room by trans friends that became, for a few years, the nucleus of trans writing and publishing, only to later collapse into itself like a black hole. TO REREAD IMOGEN Binnie’s cult classic Nevada nearly ten years after its first publication is to remember the seismic shift this novel created in both queer/trans literature and in life. ![]()

Teratologies are more than a bestiary: a catalogue of 'freaks' designed to celebrate the 'normal.' Rather, teratologies illustrate how humor, horror, fantasy and the 'real' cross-fertilize each other, resulting in the possibility of new worlds, ethics, and narratives, emerging. ![]() Despite its apparently monolithic definition, 'teratology' (from the Greek word teras, meaning 'monster,' and the Latin logy, which is derived from the Greek logia, meaning 'a speaking, discourse, treatise, doctrine, theory, science') seems infinitely malleable, flourishing in various rhetorical environments. ![]() ![]() ![]() 'I love Tessa Dare who writes sassy, salty heroines with plenty of backbone' Sarra Manning on The Wallflower Wager for RED ONLINE And if Penny is intent on saving Gabe, perhaps he might just need to save her first. ![]() Rising to the challenge, Gabriel does not expect such a simple task to result in intimacy with Penny, and soon he finds this spirited spinster is not the push-over he thought.īut Gabe is not the only one with a past he'd rather forget. In a society similar to ours in some ways and very different in others, 16-year-old Serena and her older sister, Willow, struggle to get by in a tough, crime-infested urban neighborhood. ![]() ![]() ![]() Once you engaged the enemy, speed was everything. When you weren't moving you were nothing but someone's target. "I want to go home." – "They almost killed you at home." – "Now I'm with you and they've almost killed me twice." Pike had learned this with the Marines – the one time a man didn't clean his rifle, that's when it jammed the one time you tape down a buckle or secure your gear, the noise it made got you killed. Pike didn't believe he would find anything, but he had to check, so he did, ignoring her. Pike studied the passengers in each vehicle, but none acted like killers on the hunt. It had saved them last night in Malibu, but now it might get them killed. Also the way he finds out the location of the bad guy near the end of the book doesn't seem very realistic. ![]() Especially the start doesn't look very logical when you look back. I enjoyed The Watchman, it was a page-turner with a lot of action and an interesting main character. Joe Pike – ex-cop, ex-Marine, and ex-mercenary – is tasked with the protection of a rich girl, who is a witness in a money-laundering investigation and hence is hunted by killers. ![]() ![]() LitWorld World Read Aloud Day website at. ![]()

This also helps to explain why so many college campuses have been beset by demonstrations against controversial speakers, attempts to micro-manage community speech, and the growth of a “call-out culture” that shames people who try to speak their minds. This may explain why today’s students display historically high levels of mental illness, self-harm, and suicide. ![]() Haidt, a social psychologist, and Lukianoff, a free-speech campaigner, believe that modern children have been inoculated with three Great Untruths: “What doesn’t kill you makes you weaker,” “Always trust your feelings,” and “Life is a battle between good people and evil people.” These three ideas are based on cognitive distortions-overgeneralizing, emotional reasoning, black-and-white thinking, and others-that are common among people who suffer from depression and anxiety. ![]() ![]() She hopes this secretive, decadent world will shield her from the demons of her past.
